BRISTOL, R.I. (May 23, 2007) – BankNewport sponsored over 150 students and teachers from the Guiteras Elementary School in Bristol to enjoy a special Paper Bag Players performance of “Dandelion” recently held at Roberts Hall on the campus of Rhode Island College. BankNewport has been a proud sponsor of The Paper Bag Players performance for the past two years.
During the performance of “Dandelion,” Guiteras Elementary School students, in grades kindergarten through third, were taken on a theatrical adventure from the beginning of the world to the beginning of civilization. The show combined short plays, music, dance and audience participation and touched on everything from earthquakes to fishes to dinosaurs and dandelions!
Based in New York, the Paper Bag Players, founded in 1958 by Judith Martin, are a company of adults who create and perform original theater for children ages 4 through 9. Their shows combine short plays, dances, audience participation, mime, painting and drawing on stage, and wonderful ragtime music played live at every performance. The subject matter of the shows reflects a child's everyday experiences—with a dash of the fantastic thrown in! Common household objects, cardboard boxes and brown craft paper brightened with poster paint and crayon, become their sets, props and costumes. The Paper Bag Players are the proud recipient of the American Alliance for Theater and Education Award, an OBIE and Nick Jr.’s Playful People Award.
